Dr. Chopra is a Professor of Medicine whose research interests focus on alpha-one antitrypsin deficiency and cholestatic liver diseases primary sclerosing cholangitis and primary biliary cholangitis. He has been involved in collaborative research projects with the Starzl Transplant Institute and the Liver Cancer Center, and has served as co-investigator on a number of multicenter trials investigating novel therapies and approaches to the management. His research work has culminated in 50 scientific presentations at national and international conferences. He was a co-investigator on the following NIH-funded research studies: PSC Resource of Genetic Risk, Environment and Synergy Studies (PROGRESS) – Principal Investigator – Dr. K Lazaridis, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. A Preliminary Study of the Efficacy and Safety of Carbamazepine in Severe Liver Disease Due to Alpha-1-Antitrypsin Deficiency (Principal Investigator – Dr. David Perlmutter, Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh) A prospective study comparing surgical therapies versus interventional radiologic interventions for management of gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with chronic liver disease. With respect to publications, Dr. Chopra has over 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals with five articles as first author and ten as senior author. He has contributed as the senior author for four textbook chapters and has a monograph on Hepatic Steatosis on the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Point of Care project. In recognition of his role as a mentor and his contributions to the Clinical Research Scholars Program (CRSP) of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), he was offered a secondary appointment in Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Pittsburgh in September 2012.

Dr. Chopra is based at the UPMC Mercy Digestive Health Center, Center for Liver Diseases and the Starzl Transplant Institute He provides consultative services in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology at the UPMC Mercy, Presbyterian/Montefiore, UPMC Passavant, UPMC Shadyside and the Magee Women’s Hospitals. Dr. Chopra's clinical interests include the following: evaluation and management of patients with acute and chronic liver disease. These include: abnormal liver function tests; acute liver failure; cirrhosis of the liver; viral hepatitis C; viral hepatitis B; alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease; autoimmune hepatitis; primary biliary cholangitis; primary sclerosing cholangitis; genetic liver disorders - hereditary hemochromatosis; alpha-one antitrypsin deficiency; liver tumors - both benign [hemangioma; adenoma; focal nodular hyperplasia] and malignant [hepatocellular carcinoma]; non cirrhotic portal hypertension - portal venous thrombosis. Management of complications of cirrhosis of liver [portal hypertension - esophageal varices; gastric varices; ascites; hepatic encephalopathy]. Cardiac Amyloidosis Center, member, multidisciplinary team. He is board-certified in Transplant Hepatology - involved in the evaluation and selection of patients for liver transplantation; managing patients on the liver transplant waitlist; management of patients after liver transplantation. He is board-certified in Gastroenterology who provides gastrointestinal endoscopy services - esophagogastroduodenoscopy; colonoscopy Dr Chopra has served in several leadership/administrative roles throughout his clinical career. He is currently the Vice Chair of Medicine, UPMC Mercy. Prior leadership/administrative roles include: Clinical Director of Hepatology; Medical Director - Liver Transplantation; Medical Director of the Comprehensive Liver Program, UPMC Liver Pancreas Institute; Primary Physician, UPMC Liver Transplantation Program - UNOS; Director - Hemochromatosis Program.

Dr. Chopra plays a role in teaching medical students, internal medicine residents and gastroenterology and hepatology fellows. This includes: precepting in outpatient and inpatient settings, the training of gastroenterology fellows in GI endoscopic procedures. He is a faculty lecturer for the second year medical school course in Digestion and Nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School; a contributor to its syllabus; has served as a facilitator of problem based learning sessions and clinical workshops; faculty for the fourth year medical student elective: Changing Science, Changing Society: A Guide to 21st Century Medicine Hepatitis C drug development: science and controversy He is a faculty lecturer for the Gastroenterology and Hepatology core curriculum lecture series for internal medicine residents and the Gastroenterology State of the Art lecture series for gastroenterology faculty and fellows. He served as coordinator for the Gastroenterology fellows journal club meetings. Additionally, he was a faculty lecturer for the “Acute Management Series” for the Internal Medicine residents each year from 2006 to 2013. Dr. Chopra plays a role in educating physicians, advance practice providers [nurse practitioners; physician assistants], nurses through continuing medical education (CME) conferences both at the University and at the community level. He has served as the keynote speaker or visiting professor in over 50 CME symposia and conferences since 2000. He has served as Course Director for the Medical Student Elective - UPSOM: Liver Transplant [2006-2019] He has served as Program Director, Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program, UPMC [2006-2019] He has served as Program Director, Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program, Mayo Clinic Arizona [2005-2006]
