I am interested in communication in the ICU, gender in academic medicine, and curriculum development.

I am interested in helping patients and families get through difficult times. Unfortunately, we often cannot change a patient's illness, but we can hopefully change the experience of their illness. This may mean different things for different people. Whether it's helping to manage pain or other symptoms to give a patient a more comfortable experience, shifting the focus of care to aggressively treat symptoms, or advocating for a patient or family, I strive to make difficult times at least a little easier. I also practice critical care medicine through the VA Healthcare System in Pittsburgh.

I am interested in teaching communication skills to all levels and background of learners. I have a particular interest in teaching about communication in the ICU. I have also developed an online curriculum about basic critical care topics for residents, and am involved with the Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program curriculum.
