Research Interest
Dr. Jawa’s research focuses on studying health disparities at the intersection of substance use and infectious diseases and studying implementation of novel harm reduction interventions in traditional health settings. She completed a two year post-doctoral NIAID funded T32AI052074 fellowship where she used predominantly quantitative methods to evaluate the impacts of sharing of injection drug preparation equipment on skin and soft tissue infections and impacts of opioid and stimulant co-use on behavioral risk factors for HIV among a cohort of hospitalized persons who inject drugs. She has also led a single center multidisciplinary naloxone bystander train the trainer program and developed and evaluated a clinician-facing community informed intervention introducing safer injection counseling to persons with substance use disorder.
More recently she, along with multi-institutional collaborators, led evaluations of the NIDA RO1 Prescribe to Save Lives Study, a multicenter type 3 hybrid implementation naloxone and buprenorphine training intervention with academic detailing at Ryan White-funded HIV clinics. Her current research includes a modeling evaluation of infectious outcomes and cost-effectiveness of expanding co-located addiction care with hospital and primary care-based strategies, which have been published in JAMA Open Network.
Clinical Interest
Dr. Jawa’s clinical work experience has included providing co-located HIV primary care, office-based addiction treatment for patients with infectious complications of drug use at major academic medical centers and complex inpatient management of endovascular and serious bacterial infectious complications of drug use. Her clinical interests include developing novel models of care delivery for persons with substance use disorders: low barrier clinics, co-located specialty clinics, integrated care in community settings.
Educational Interest
Dr. Jawa led academic lectures on implementation of harm reduction interventions and prevention of infectious complications of drug use. She has enjoyed mentoring several medical trainees on developing and studying novel addiction medicine and community-based harm reduction curricula into early trainee medical education.
