Fundamentals of Bench Research Course

This year's course is scheduled for July 16-27, 2018 and is open to all clinical fellows and physician scientists at the Instructor level in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

The schedule includes lectures by faculties from both Pitt and CMU with expertise in basic and translational research utilizing various research techniques. This two-week course is designed to teach fellows in training, future clinician scientists, physician scientists and scientists-in-training the core principles of basic and translational investigation as it relates to the understanding of human diseases. The course has been restructured to build upon fundamental concepts that progress logically from the molecular, cellular, organ, and human disease level and focusing on key concepts, methodologies and novel technologies, emphasis on problem solving approach, and application to address translational questions. In addition, participants acquire laboratory technical skills via a "learning by doing" approach during an intensive two-week period.

The morning consists of lectures (located in the classrooms in the BST lobby) and the afternoon sessions will be held in various local laboratories.

Attendance during the lectures is a pre-requisite for participation in the laboratory training.

Due to the two-week time commitment of this course, all registrations are contingent on the approval of the registrant’s Division Chief or Department Chair.
