Research Training
Each fellow is provided with 18 months of protected time for advanced training in biomedical research. Additional research training time is available and is strongly recommended. The goal of research training is to provide each fellow with the skills and the mentoring needed to pursue a career as a physician-investigator.
Fellows identify a faculty mentor and a research project during their first year of training. During the second and third years of fellowship, the trainee is expected to present data at national meetings, submit manuscripts for publication, and apply for federal research funding.
Fellow progress in biomedical research training is very closely monitored. Fellows meet 3-4 times each year with a Research Committee composed of senior faculty members and regularly present their research at division conferences.
Research training in the PACCM Division is focused on eight core programs.
Acute Lung Injury / Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Adult Cystic Fibrosis and Host Defense
Asthma and Allergic Inflammation
Genomics in Lung Disease (Functional Genomics)
Emphysema Biology and Lung Imaging
Interstitial Lung Disease
Transplantation Immunology
Sleep Disordered Breathing
