Bio

John Kreit received his M.D. degree from Duke University.  His residency training was at the University of Michigan, where he was also a chief medical resident.  Dr. Kreit stayed at the University of Michigan for his fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.  Dr. Kreit joined the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh in 1991.  Since that time, he has become an accomplished clinician-educator who is heavily involved with the education of medical students, residents, and fellows.  Since 2001, Dr. Kreit has been the director of fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine as well as the director of the Pulmonary Physiology and Pathophysiology course in the medical school.  Dr. Kreit also plays a major role in resident education as chairman of the Subspecialty Education Committee in the Department of Medicine.  Dr. Kreit has won numerous teaching awards from medical students and residents, is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh, and is a member of the medical school’s Academy of Master Educators. 

Clinical Interests

Dr. Kreit is a senior clinician in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine and has expertise in caring for patients with a wide variety of pulmonary and critical illnesses.  He is particularly interested in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with pulmonary embolism, acute lung injury, and respiratory failure.

Academic and Research Interests

Dr. Kreit’s main academic focus is the education of medical students, residents, and fellows.  His teaching methods include lectures, which cover a wide variety of pulmonary and critical care topics, as well as bedside, patient-based teaching.  Dr. Kreit has also written a number of review articles and book chapters, some of which are listed below.
