Six Department of Medicine Divisions Rank Among Top 20 in Nation

UPMC was recognized on the national stage once again for its clinical expertise, as one of only 20 hospitals nationwide included on the annual U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” Honor Roll for 2017.

“This marks the 18th year UPMC has been named to the Honor Roll, and we couldn’t be more proud of our physicians, nurses and other clinical specialists and support teams, who are dedicated to providing this level of care for our patients and their families each and every day,” said Leslie C. Davis, senior vice president of UPMC, and executive vice president and chief operating officer of UPMC’s Health Services Division.

Six of the hospital system’s medical specialties—all based within the Department of Medicine—were ranked among the top 20 in the nation.

The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine was ranked 5th in the nation, up from No. 7 in 2016; the Division of Gastroenterology remained at No. 6; and the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism rose to No. 8.

The Divisions of Geriatric Medicine and of Rheumatology were both ranked at  No. 11 in their respective specialties, while the Division of Cardiology was ranked 20th.

The U.S. News Honor Roll is an annual listing of 20 of the nation’s top hospitals that deliver exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care.

“The clinical excellence and patient care expertise that UPMC offers is made even greater through our close affiliation with one of the best medical schools in the country, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, as we continue to work together to advance scientific research that leads to innovation in many specialties,” said Steven Shapiro, MD, executive vice president and chief medical and scientific officer at UPMC and president of the Health Services Division.
