International Workshop on Scleroderma to Convene at Pitt on Aug. 5-9, 2017

The University of Pittsburgh will cohost the Aug. 5-9, 2017, biennial International Workshop on Scleroderma Research, the largest international meeting devoted to presentations and discussion about the disease’s pathogenic mechanisms.

The workshop, which will be held at Pitt’s University Club, is organized by the University of Pittsburgh’s Scleroderma Center, part of the Department of Medicine’s Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology. Pitt shares its hosting duties with University College London, and the workshop’s location alternates between Pittsburgh and Cambridge in the U.K. The workshop’s standing Scientific Committee is co-chaired by Robert Lafyatis MD, Thomas A. Medsger Endowed Professor of Scleroderma Research and director of Pitt’s Scleroderma Program.

The meeting draws participants from academic centers across the world as well as individuals involved in basic research and drug development in pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

Systemic sclerosis is a chronic connective tissue disease generally classified as one of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases. It can cause a hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues as well internal organs.
