Department of Medicine

University of Pittsburgh

Clinical and Research Training

The first-year is devoted almost entirely to clinical training. Each fellow rotates for 11 months on clinical services, including one month in the microbiology laboratory. In the second year there is an additional 1.5 months of clinical service time. The bulk of the second year is protected for research projects and scholarship. All fellows are expected to publish in peer-reviewed journals as evidence of scholarship. Second-year fellows can also take electives in a variety of disciplines including pediatric infectious diseases, infection control, transplant infectious diseases, tuberculosis clinic (Allegheny County Health Department), and international medicine in sites in Manila, Philippines , or Beira, Mozambique,. Fellows participate in the outpatient general infectious diseases and HIV/AIDS clinics at the Falk Medical Building throughout the fellowship.

Since the goal of the fellowship training program is to prepare physicians for an academic career in infectious diseases, an additional third year of training in research is strongly encouraged for fellows demonstrating a strong aptitude for basic, translational or clinical research. The third year is tailored to the individual research goals of the fellows with input from mentoring faculty. A schedule for the Infectious Diseases fellowship is shown below:
