Profile
Elias Halvas, Ph.D. is a Research Associate in the laboratory of Dr. John Mellors, and a faculty member of the Viral Diseases Unit in the Division of Infectious Diseases. His research focuses on developing both biochemical and molecular biology-based diagnostics that can be used to detect and quantify the presence of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) minority species (sub populations of HIV-1 at a frequency of <20% of total population) from patient samples. The techniques used to detect these minority species of HIV-1 include RT-PCR based technologies, high throughput sequencing, and cloning. Detection as well as genotypic and phenotypic characterization of these minority species (variants) may provide information on the molecular mechanisms by which drug-resistance in HIV-1 occurs. This information in turn will provide insight on how to treat, control and eventually eliminate existing HIV-1 infection.
