Welcome to the University of Pittsburgh Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and the GI Fellowship Program. The GI Fellowship program seeks to select, develop and mentor young physicians in a thoughtful and scholarly manner, and we are pleased that you are interested in what our program has to offer.

We have established centers in hepatology and transplantation medicine, gastrointestinal motility and functional bowel disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition, pancreatic disorders, gastrointestinal oncology, and therapeutic endoscopy. Our GI Laboratories are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipment. 

Our program provides an established educational curriculum with excellence in clinical service and training as well as outstanding research opportunities.  In addition to this, the Program has incorporated a novel "career track" process into the fellows' training program.  The purpose of incorporating career tracks into the fellowship include:

1. Fellows' definition of long-term career goals at the beginning of the fellowship.

2.  The provision of a structured three-year training experience to allow each fellow to achieve their career goals.
3. The advancement of interested fellows into a third-tier, specialized training programs.

The three career tracks include the following:

• Physician Scientist
• Clinical Investigator/Research
• Clinician Educator/Informatics.

Additional masters-level courses may be taken as part of the training program (e.g., courses in public health, business administration and education). All current fellows are involved in clinical or basic research projects with the faculty.  At the completion of the three-year fellowship, all fellows submit at least one manuscript to a peer reviewed journal.

Clinical training is conducted at the University hospitals and the Oakland Veteran's Administration Medical Center (VAMC). There are also opportunities for evaluation of patients at Magee Women's Hospital and at the Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic. Longitudinal ambulatory experiences in our Digestive Disorders Center and at the VAMC are an integral part of training.
