The Liver Transplantation Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute is one of the oldest and largest transplantation programs in the United States and has the greatest worldwide experience in liver transplantation. This was achieved primarily through the pioneering work of Dr Thomas Starzl, who performed the world’s first successful liver transplantation in 1967. The University of Pittsburgh has remained a leader in transplantation and transplant related research since the early 1980s. The Transplant Institute currently performs greater than 300 liver transplants per year and a similar number of kidney transplants. In addition, pancreas, small bowel, heart and lung transplants are performed.
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s one-year Fellowship in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation is designed to provide outstanding training in clinical hepatology and liver transplantation, fulfilling UNOS criteria for Liver Transplant Physicians. The Hepatology Program functions within the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition and it works closely with the Starzl Transplantation Institute. It provides comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care to patients with a wide variety of liver diseases. Applicants must have completed three years of internal medicine training in an accredited program. Gastroenterology training is preferred.
