Profile
Dr. Whitcomb is well-known in the field of pancreatology. He is Professor of Medicine, Cell Biology & Physiology, and Human Genetics and Chief, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh. He was recently appointed to the endowed chair of the Giant Eagle Foundation Professor of Cancer Genetics. Dr. Whitcomb’s laboratory and collaborating groups opened the field of pancreatic genetics with the discovery of the gene causing hereditary pancreatitis, published in Nature Genetics in 1996. He continues to make major discoveries and contributions to the field of pancreatology. He has authored over 100 manuscripts, written dozens of book chapters for major textbooks, and has edited three books on pancreatic diseases. Dr. Whitcomb is a popular visiting professor and international speaker. He serves on a number of editorial boards, society councils, and advisory committees.
