Dr. Primack graduated Yale University magna cum laude in 1991 with degrees in English and mathematics. He then received his master’s degree in psychology and education from Harvard University. He subsequently graduated first in his class from Emory Medical School in 1999 and trained in family medicine at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He now combines his expertise and interests by researching the ways in which mass media messages can affect health outcomes, both positively and negatively. He also studies the use of media literacy education and other interventions to reduce tobacco and alcohol abuse, risky sexual behavior, disordered eating patterns, emotional health problems, and inappropriate prescribing.
He is the recipient of the 2006 New Investigator of the Year Award from the Society of Adolescent Medicine, the 2009 Faculty Physician Scholar Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the 2010 Top Early Career Researcher from the Society for Behavioral Medicine. He is director of the Program for Research on Media and Health at the University of Pittsburgh.
