Dr. Smith joined the University of Pittsburgh in 2001 as Interim Director of the Section of Hospital Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, and since that time has successfully changed his career path from clinician-educator to clinician-investigator while still maintaining many clinical and research educational roles.

His research centers on the cost-effectiveness of common medical interventions, most notably on adult pneumococcal and varicella/zoster vaccination. He has published in many other areas, including pelvic inflammatory disease, influenza management strategies, diabetes prevention and treatment, VA formulary decisions, anticoagulation management, and hospital-physician communication. In addition, he is an associate editor of the journal Medical Decision Making.
