Research Interest
Dr. Gordon is a Professor of Medicine, Professor of Clinical and Translational Science, and Advisory Dean at the University of Pittsburgh. He has a 16-year track record of conducting research on quality, equity, and efficiency of health care provision for vulnerable populations (e.g., persons with opioid use disorders, persons who are homeless, persons with hazardous alcohol use and other addiction disorders). He is a previous VA Health Services and Research Development (HSR&D) Career Awardee, and his current research foci include investigating the outcomes of and implementation of evidence based identification, assessment, and treatment for patients with addiction disorders within primary care, primary care medical homes, and other non-specialty clinical environments. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Substance Abuse journal (current impact factor 2.56). In addition, he has published more than 136 peer reviewed papers; 56 peer-reviewed abstracts; 13 books or book chapters; 13 guidelines, monographs, and letters; 55 non-peer reviewed publications; and presented/authored over 137 peer-reviewed presentations at international research conferences.
Clinical Interest
Dr. Gordon is a board-certified physician in internal medicine (American Board of Internal Medicine) and addiction medicine (American Board of Addiction Medicine who provides primary care and addiction medicine care in longitudinal care clinics. He is the Director of the Addiction Triage for Homeless: Enhancing VA Medical Homes (ANTHEM) program at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, a medical home for Veterans who are homeless or at risk for being homeless. He serves as the Co-Director of Research, Section of Treatment, Research, and Education in Addiction Medicine (STREAM) and in this capacity assist in developing clinical, educational, and research initiatives regarding patients and populations with addiction disorders.
Educational Interest
Dr. Gordon has significant educational and administrative roles at the University of Pittsburgh, the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, and the VA nationally. At the University, he serves as an Advisory Dean where he mentors and advises between 75-100 medical students annually. In the VA, he was 1 of 8 authors who authored the 2015 VA/Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guidelines for Substance Use Disorders. He also directs the national Buprenorphine in the VA Initiative, and VA’s National Coordinating Center for the VA’s Interprofessional Advanced Fellowships in Addiction Treatment. He serves as the Fellowship Director for the VA Pittsburgh's Interdisciplinary Addictions Program for Education and Research (VIPER), an interdisciplinary program for post-graduate scholars regarding addiction scholarship.
