Research Interest
My research has focused on clinical and translational studies related to extensively drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. We have shown that resistance to ceftazidime-avibactam in KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumonia emerges via reversion of the KPC-3 beta-lactamase into an ESBL-like enzyme. In addition, we have described AmpC beta-lactamase-mediated resistance towards ceftolozane-tazobactam among MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa. I am also intersted in clinical research involving SOT recipients and am currently involved in projects sponsored by the American Society of Transplantation ID Community of Practice. I am overseeing HIV-to-HIV organ transplantation at UPMC as part of the multicenter HOPE trial, which aims at determining the safety and efficacy of transplanting an HIV-positive organ into an HIV-positive recipient.
Clinical Interest
My clinical interest is in infections of organ and hematopietic cell transplant recipients, particularly MDR Gram-negative bacteria, mold infections, cryptococcosis, and drug-resistant CMV.
Educational Interest
I am one of the Associate Program Directors for the ID Training Program and give the "Introduction to SOT Immunology and Infections" lecture to the ID fellows. I participate in the "Introduction to Being a Physician" and "Problem-Based-Learning" courses given to first-year medical students. I also oversee the weekly ID Grand Rounds.
