Welcome to the Division of General Internal Medicine

The Division of General Internal Medicine has a long-standing tradition of excellence in patient care, education, and research.

The division's clinical activities focus on delivering high-quality and comprehensive care for the prevention of diseases, the management of chronic disorders, and the treatment of hospitalized patients. The division is extensively involved in continuous quality improvement efforts, and it provides up-to-date evidence-based care for diverse patient populations from Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities. The division's faculty members serve as clinical role models for students and housestaff.

The division is a leader in educational activities at the student, resident, fellow, and faculty levels. Division faculty are responsible for the teaching of students in all 4 years of medical school. They direct the Categorical Residency Training Program, which includes the Women's Health Track, the Global Health Track, the Generalist Track, and the Hospital Medicine Track. They also direct the community categorical, medicine-pediatrics, preliminary year, and transitional year programs. In addition to teaching in the various residency training programs, the division faculty teach extensively in programs offered by the Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE).

The division has major research programs that focus on studies of health care quality and effectiveness, women's health, prevention, health care disparities, mental health services, cost-effectiveness, and substance abuse. Research education is a major part of the division's activities and is implemented through the ICRE. Much of the research is carried out through the Center for Research on Health Care (CRHC) and the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP). These centers provide a mechanism for interdisciplinary collaboration and research with faculty throughout the University and with members of the RAND–University of Pittsburgh Health Institute.
